كَم بَيْنَ بَانِ الأَجْرَعِ
2
وَرَامَةٍ وَلَعْلَعِ
3
مِنْ قَلْبِ صَبٍّ مُوْجَعِ
4
سَكْرَانَ وَجْدٍ لَا يَعِي
5
تَرَاهُ مَا بَيْنَ الحُلَلْ
6
جَرِيْحَ أَسْيَافِ المُقَلْ
7
فَارْفُقْ بِهِ وَلَا تَسَلْ
8
عَنْ قَلْبِهِ المُضَيَّعِ
9
وَدَّ الحِمَىٰ فَأَخْلَصَا
10
إِذْ حَقُّهُ قَدْ حَصْحَصَا
11
فَوُدُّهُ أَنْ يَخْلُصَا
12
مِنَ الحَضِيْضِ الأَوْضَعِ
13
إِلَى المَقَامِ الأَوَّلِ
14
وَمَعْهَدِ الأُنْسِ الحَلِيْ
15
وَالمَرْبَعِ السَّامِيْ العَلِيْ
16
سَقْياً لَهُ مِنْ مَرْبَعِ
17
رَحَلْتُ عَنْ ذَاكَ الفَضَا
18
لَا بِاخْتِيَارِيْ وَالرِّضَا
19
فَيَا زَمَاناً قَدْ مَضَىٰ
20
إِنْ عَادَ مَاضٍ فَارْجِعِ
21
وَارْكَعْ إِذَا اللَّيْلُ دَجَىٰ
22
رُكُوْعَ خَوْفٍ وَرَجَا
23
وَعَدِّ فِي سُفْنِ النَّجَا
24
إِلَى الفَضَاءِ الأَوْسَعِ
25
عَلَيْكَ بِالتَّهَجُّدِ
26
وَقُمْ طَوِيلاً وَاسْجُدِ
27
وَبِتْ نَدِيْمَ الفَرْقَدِ
28
وَاشْرَبْ كُؤُوْسَ الأَدْمُعِ
29
قِفْ عِنْدَ حُكْمِ المُصْحَفِ
30
مِنْ غَيْرِ مَا تَحَرُّفِ
31
وَلَا تَخُضْ وُقِيْتَ فِيْ
32
أَقْوَالِ أَهْلِ البِدَعِ
33
فَإِنَّهُ كَلَامُهُ
34
أَعْيَى الوَرَىٰ نِظَامُهُ
35
وَبَهَرَتْ أَحْكَامُهُ
36
الغُرَّ جَمِيْعَ الشِّيَعِ
37
مِنْهُ كَمَا جَاءَ بَدَا
38
فَكُنْ بِهِ مُعْتَضِدَا
39
وَلَا تُجَادِلْ أَحَدَا
40
فِيْ آيِهِ وَارْتَدِعِ
41
وَلَا تُؤَوِّلْ مَا وَرَدْ
42
لِلهِ مِنْ سَمْعٍ وَيَدْ
43
وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدْ
44
قَوْلَ امْرِئٍ مُتَّبِعِ
45
وَإِنَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلْ
46
كَلَّمَ مُوسَىٰ ذَا الوَجَلْ
47
لَمَّا تَجَلَّى لِلْجَبَلْ
48
جَهْراً كَلَاماً مُسْمَعِ
49
أَصْغَىٰ إِلَيْهِ فَوَعَىٰ
50
بِأُذْنِهِ مَا سَمِعَا
51
ثُمَّ أَجَابَ مُسْرِعَا
52
جَوَابَ ثَبْتٍ أَرْوَعِ
53
وَلَا تُوَافِقْ مَنْ غَوَىٰ
54
وَقُلْ بِأَنَّ ذَا القُوَىٰ
55
حَقًّا عَلَى العَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ
56
كَمَا أَرَادَ فَاسْمَعِ
57
وَهُوَ تَعَالَى فِي السَّمَا
58
عَالٍ وَمَعْنَىٰ ﴿أَيْنَمَا﴾
59
بِغَيْرِ كَيْفٍ لَا كَمَا
60
يَخْطُرُ لِلْمُبْتَدِعِ
61
مَنْ قَاسَهُ مِنَ البَشَرِ
62
بِخَلْقِهِ فَقَدْ كَفَرِ
63
وَقَدْ أَطَاعَ وَنَصَرِ
64
أَمْرَ الهَوَىٰ المُتَّبَعِ
65
وَيْلاهُ مِنْ وَزْنِ العَمَلْ
66
وَبَحْرُهُ عِنْدِيْ وَشِلْ
67
قَدْ غَاضَ طَامِيْهِ وَقَلْ
68
فَمَا تَرَى فِي مَنْبَعِ
69
وَاعْتَرَضَتْ جَهَنَّمُ
70
وَنَارُهَا تَضْطَرِمُ
71
وَكُبَّ فِيْهَا المُجْرِمُ
72
وَقِيْلَ يَا نَارُ ابْلَعِيْ
73
وَجَنَّةُ الفِرْدَوْسِ قَدْ
74
تَزَخْرَفَتْ لِمَنْ عَبَدْ
75
وَقَامَ لَيْلاً وَسَجَدْ
76
فِي طِمْرِهِ المُرَقَّعِ
77
وَنَهَدَتْ أَبْكَارُهَا
78
وَاطَّرَدَتْ أَنْهَارُهَا
79
وَغَرَّدَتْ أَطْيَارُهَا
80
فِي كُلِّ غُصْنٍ مُوْنِعِ
81
يَا مَنْ لَهُ تَبَتُّلِيْ
82
فِي كُلِّ لَيْلٍ أَلْيَلِ
83
وَمَنْ إِلَيْهِ مَوْئِلِيْ
84
دُوْنَ الوَرَىٰ وَمَفْزَعِيْ
85
صَلِّ عَلَى خَيْرِ البَشَرِ
86
مِنْ كُلِّ أُنْثَىٰ وَذَكَرِ
87
مُحَمَّدٍ وَجْهِ القَمَرِ
88
ذِي الجَانِبِ المُمَنَّعِ
English Translation
1
How vast the longing stretched between the trees of Al-Ajraʿ
2
And between the valleys of Rāmah and Laʿlaʿ
3
From the heart of a stricken lover, consumed by yearning
4
Drunk with passion, bereft of sense and awareness
5
You behold him clad in splendid garments
6
Yet pierced by the swords of glances
7
So show him mercy, and do not ask
8
About his heart, utterly lost and scattered
9
He loved the sacred abode with sincere devotion
10
For its truth has become manifest and clear
11
And all he longs for is deliverance
12
From the lowest depths of worldly abasement
13
Back to the first and noblest station
14
To the dwelling of sweet intimacy
15
To the lofty and exalted resting place
16
May blessed rain forever fall upon it
17
I departed from that spacious realm
18
Not by choice, nor with contentment
19
If what has passed could return, then return with it
20
O time that has slipped away
21
Bow when the night grows dark
22
A bowing filled with fear and hope
23
And board the vessels of salvation
24
Toward the boundless expanse beyond
25
Hold fast to the night prayer
26
Stand long in worship, then prostrate
27
Spend the night in the company of the stars
28
And drink deeply from goblets of tears
29
Stand firm by the rulings of the Qur’an
30
Without distortion or alteration
31
And do not immerse yourself—may you be guarded—
32
In the sayings of the people of innovation
33
For truly it is His Speech
34
Its matchless order has wearied all creation
35
Its judgments have astonished
36
The noblest minds of every people
37
From Him it came, exactly as it was revealed
38
So take strength and support through it
39
And dispute with no one
40
Regarding its verses; rather restrain yourself
41
Do not twist what has come authentically
42
Concerning Allah’s Hearing and Hand
43
But say: "He is Allah, the One"
44
As one who faithfully follows revelation
45
And indeed He, Mighty and Majestic,
46
Spoke to Moses, filled with awe
47
When He manifested to the mountain
48
Openly, in speech that was heard
49
He listened attentively and understood
50
With his own ears all that he heard
51
Then he answered swiftly
52
With a firm and wondrous reply
53
Do not side with those astray
54
But affirm that the Lord of Power
55
Truly rose above the Throne
56
As He willed—so hear and accept
57
And He, Exalted is He, is above the heavens
58
Most High; and the meaning of ﴿أَيْنَمَا﴾
59
Is accepted without asking "how," not according to
60
The imaginings of innovators
61
Whoever compares Him among mankind
62
To His creation has fallen into disbelief
63
And has obeyed and aided
64
The commands of wayward desire
65
Woe to me when deeds are weighed
66
My ocean of good is but a trickling stream
67
Its swelling waters have ebbed and shrunk
68
Till scarcely a source remains
69
And Hell rises before me as a barrier
70
Its flames blaze fiercely
71
The sinner is hurled headlong into it
72
And it is cried: "O Fire, consume!"
73
While Paradise, the highest Garden,
74
Has been adorned for those who worshipped
75
Who stood by night and prostrated
76
Clad in humble patched garments
77
Its maidens come forth radiant
78
Its rivers flow unceasingly
79
Its birds sing in melody
80
Upon every laden, flourishing branch
81
O You to whom my devotion belongs
82
In every dark and moonless night
83
And You to whom I flee for shelter
84
Beyond all creation, my only refuge
85
Send blessings upon the best of humankind
86
Among every female and male
87
Muhammad, moon-faced in radiance
88
Possessor of lofty and protected rank
1
كَم بَيْنَ بَانِ الأَجْرَعِ
How vast the longing stretched between the trees of Al-Ajraʿ
2
وَرَامَةٍ وَلَعْلَعِ
And between the valleys of Rāmah and Laʿlaʿ
3
مِنْ قَلْبِ صَبٍّ مُوْجَعِ
From the heart of a stricken lover, consumed by yearning

سَكْرَانَ وَجْدٍ لَا يَعِي
Drunk with passion, bereft of sense and awareness
5
تَرَاهُ مَا بَيْنَ الحُلَلْ
You behold him clad in splendid garments

جَرِيْحَ أَسْيَافِ المُقَلْ
Yet pierced by the swords of glances

فَارْفُقْ بِهِ وَلَا تَسَلْ
So show him mercy, and do not ask

عَنْ قَلْبِهِ المُضَيَّعِ
About his heart, utterly lost and scattered
9
وَدَّ الحِمَىٰ فَأَخْلَصَا
He loved the sacred abode with sincere devotion
10
إِذْ حَقُّهُ قَدْ حَصْحَصَا
For its truth has become manifest and clear
11
فَوُدُّهُ أَنْ يَخْلُصَا
And all he longs for is deliverance
12
مِنَ الحَضِيْضِ الأَوْضَعِ
From the lowest depths of worldly abasement
13
إِلَى المَقَامِ الأَوَّلِ
Back to the first and noblest station
14
وَمَعْهَدِ الأُنْسِ الحَلِيْ

وَالمَرْبَعِ السَّامِيْ العَلِيْ
To the lofty and exalted resting place

سَقْياً لَهُ مِنْ مَرْبَعِ

رَحَلْتُ عَنْ ذَاكَ الفَضَا
I departed from that spacious realm

لَا بِاخْتِيَارِيْ وَالرِّضَا

فَيَا زَمَاناً قَدْ مَضَىٰ
If what has passed could return, then return with it

إِنْ عَادَ مَاضٍ فَارْجِعِ

وَارْكَعْ إِذَا اللَّيْلُ دَجَىٰ
Bow when the night grows dark

رُكُوْعَ خَوْفٍ وَرَجَا
A bowing filled with fear and hope
23
وَعَدِّ فِي سُفْنِ النَّجَا
And board the vessels of salvation
24
إِلَى الفَضَاءِ الأَوْسَعِ
Toward the boundless expanse beyond
25
عَلَيْكَ بِالتَّهَجُّدِ
Hold fast to the night prayer
26
وَقُمْ طَوِيلاً وَاسْجُدِ
Stand long in worship, then prostrate
27
وَبِتْ نَدِيْمَ الفَرْقَدِ
Spend the night in the company of the stars
28
وَاشْرَبْ كُؤُوْسَ الأَدْمُعِ
And drink deeply from goblets of tears
29
قِفْ عِنْدَ حُكْمِ المُصْحَفِ
Stand firm by the rulings of the Qur’an
30
مِنْ غَيْرِ مَا تَحَرُّفِ
Without distortion or alteration
31
وَلَا تَخُضْ وُقِيْتَ فِيْ
And do not immerse yourself—may you be guarded—
32
أَقْوَالِ أَهْلِ البِدَعِ
In the sayings of the people of innovation
33
فَإِنَّهُ كَلَامُهُ
For truly it is His Speech
34
أَعْيَى الوَرَىٰ نِظَامُهُ
Its matchless order has wearied all creation
35
وَبَهَرَتْ أَحْكَامُهُ
Its judgments have astonished
36
الغُرَّ جَمِيْعَ الشِّيَعِ
The noblest minds of every people
37
مِنْهُ كَمَا جَاءَ بَدَا
From Him it came, exactly as it was revealed
38
فَكُنْ بِهِ مُعْتَضِدَا
So take strength and support through it
39
وَلَا تُجَادِلْ أَحَدَا
And dispute with no one
40
فِيْ آيِهِ وَارْتَدِعِ
Regarding its verses; rather restrain yourself

وَلَا تُؤَوِّلْ مَا وَرَدْ

لِلهِ مِنْ سَمْعٍ وَيَدْ
Concerning Allah’s Hearing and Hand
43
وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدْ
But say: "He is Allah, the One"
44
قَوْلَ امْرِئٍ مُتَّبِعِ
As one who faithfully follows revelation
45
وَإِنَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلْ
And indeed He, Mighty and Majestic,
46
كَلَّمَ مُوسَىٰ ذَا الوَجَلْ
Spoke to Moses, filled with awe
47
لَمَّا تَجَلَّى لِلْجَبَلْ
When He manifested to the mountain
48
جَهْراً كَلَاماً مُسْمَعِ
Openly, in speech that was heard
49
أَصْغَىٰ إِلَيْهِ فَوَعَىٰ
He listened attentively and understood
50
بِأُذْنِهِ مَا سَمِعَا
With his own ears all that he heard
51
ثُمَّ أَجَابَ مُسْرِعَا
Then he answered swiftly
52
جَوَابَ ثَبْتٍ أَرْوَعِ
With a firm and wondrous reply
53
وَلَا تُوَافِقْ مَنْ غَوَىٰ
Do not side with those astray
54
وَقُلْ بِأَنَّ ذَا القُوَىٰ
But affirm that the Lord of Power
55
حَقًّا عَلَى العَرْشِ اسْتَوَىٰ
Truly rose above the Throne
56
كَمَا أَرَادَ فَاسْمَعِ
As He willed—so hear and accept
57
وَهُوَ تَعَالَى فِي السَّمَا
And He, Exalted is He, is above the heavens
58
عَالٍ وَمَعْنَىٰ ﴿أَيْنَمَا﴾
Most High; and the meaning of ﴿أَيْنَمَا﴾

بِغَيْرِ كَيْفٍ لَا كَمَا

وَقِيْلَ يَا نَارُ ابْلَعِيْ

وَجَنَّةُ الفِرْدَوْسِ قَدْ
While Paradise, the highest Garden,
74
تَزَخْرَفَتْ لِمَنْ عَبَدْ
Has been adorned for those who worshipped
75
وَقَامَ لَيْلاً وَسَجَدْ
Who stood by night and prostrated
76
فِي طِمْرِهِ المُرَقَّعِ
Clad in humble patched garments
77
وَنَهَدَتْ أَبْكَارُهَا
Its maidens come forth radiant

وَاطَّرَدَتْ أَنْهَارُهَا
Its rivers flow unceasingly

وَغَرَّدَتْ أَطْيَارُهَا
Its birds sing in melody

فِي كُلِّ غُصْنٍ مُوْنِعِ

يَا مَنْ لَهُ تَبَتُّلِيْ
O You to whom my devotion belongs

فِي كُلِّ لَيْلٍ أَلْيَلِ

Muhammad, moon-faced in radiance

Possessor of lofty and protected rank
