أَلا كُلُّ ماشِيَةِ الخَيزَلى
2
فِدا كُلُّ ماشِيَةِ الهَيذَبى
3
وَكُلِّ نَجاةٍ بُجاوِيَّةٍ
4
خَنوفٍ وَما بِيَ حُسنُ المِشى
5
وَلَكِنَّهُنَّ حِبالُ الحَياةِ
6
وَكَيدُ العُداةِ وَمَيطُ الأَذى
7
ضَرَبتُ بِها التيهَ ضَربَ القِمارِ
8
إِمّا لِهَذا وَإِمّا لِذا
9
إِذا فَزِعَت قَدَّمَتها الجِيادُ
10
وَبيضُ السُيوفِ وَسُمرُ القَنا
11
فَمَرَّت بِنَخلٍ وَفي رَكبِها
12
عَنِ العالَمينَ وَعَنهُ غِنى
13
وَأَمسَت تُخَيِّرُنا بِالنِقابِ
14
وادي المِياهِ وَوادي القُرى
15
وَقُلنا لَها أَينَ أَرضُ العِراقِ
16
فَقالَت وَنَحنُ بِتُربانَ ها
17
وَهَبَّت بِحِسمى هُبوبَ الدَبورِ
18
مُستَقبِلاتٍ مَهَبَّ الصَبا
19
رَوامي الكِفافِ وَكِبدِ الوِهادِ
20
وَجارِ البُوَيرَةِ وادِ الغَضى
21
وَجابَت بُسَيطَةَ جَوبَ الرِداءِ
22
بَينَ النَعامِ وَبَينَ المَها
23
إِلى عُقدَةِ الجَوفِ حَتّى شَفَت
24
بِماءِ الجُراوِيِّ بَعضَ الصَدى
25
وَلاحَ لَها صَوَرٌ وَالصَباحَ
26
وَلاحَ الشَغورُ لَها وَالضُحى
27
وَمَسّى الجُمَيعِيَّ دِئداؤُها
28
وَغادى الأَضارِعَ ثُمَّ الدَنا
29
فَيا لَكَ لَيلاً عَلى أَعكُشٍ
30
أَحَمَّ البِلادِ خَفِيَّ الصُوى
31
وَرَدنا الرُهَيمَةَ في جَوزِهِ
32
وَباقيهِ أَكثَرُ مِمّا مَضى
33
فَلَمّا أَنَخنا رَكَزنا الرِماحَ
34
فَوقَ مَكارِمِنا وَالعُلا
35
وَبِتنا نُقَبِّلُ أَسيافَنا
36
وَنَمسَحُها مِن دِماءِ العِدا
37
لِتَعلَمَ مِصرُ وَمَن بِالعِراقِ
38
وَمَن بِالعَواصِمِ أَنّي الفَتى
39
وَأَنّي وَفَيتُ وَأَنّي أَبَيتُ
40
وَأَنّي عَتَوتُ عَلى مَن عَتا
41
وَما كُلُّ مَن قالَ قَولاً وَفى
42
وَلا كُلُّ مَن سيمَ خَسفاً أَبى
43
وَلا بُدَّ لِلقَلبِ مِن آلَةٍ
44
وَرَأيٍ يُصَدِّعُ صُمَّ الصَفا
45
وَمَن يَكُ قَلبٌ كَقَلبي لَهُ
46
يَشُقُّ إِلى العِزِّ قَلبَ التَوى
47
وَكُلُّ طَريقٍ أَتاهُ الفَتى
48
عَلى قَدَرِ الرِجلِ فيهِ الخُطا
49
وَنامَ الخُوَيدِمُ عَن لَيلِنا
50
وَقَد نامَ قَبلُ عَمىً لا كَرى
51
وَكانَ عَلى قُربِنا بَينَنا
52
مَهامِهُ مِن جَهلِهِ وَالعَمى
53
وَمَن جَهِلَت نَفسُهُ قَدرَهُ

رَأى غَيرُهُ مِنهُ مالا يَرى
English Translation
1
To every woman who walks in sway,
2
my heart prefers every horse that walks with strength and steadfastness
3
And every swift camel from the land of Nubia
4
Soft-footed, yet I do not cherish graceful walking
5
But camels are the lifeline of existence
6
They are my power against enemies and my shield from harm
7
I traveled the desert with them like a gambler
8
Either I win or I lose; there is no middle path
9
When the camels feared, the horses advanced
10
Along with them were swords and spears
11
My camel passed by water while we rode it
12
Indifferent to people and the world
13
We reached a forked path, and my camel let us choose
14
The Valley of Waters or the Valley of Villages
15
We asked my camel, “Where is the land of Iraq?”
16
She said, “We are very near it”
17
The camels reached the desert, and a western wind blew
18
Facing the east
19
The fortresses of Kiffaf and the heart of Al-Wihad (place names)
20
Al-Buwairah is near Wadi Al-Ghda (Najd)
21
My camel crossed Basitah (between Kufa and Mecca) as one cuts a cloak
22
While walking among ostriches and antelopes
23
She reached the land of Al-Jawf until quenched
24
With Jurawi water, quenching a little of her thirst
25
Morning sights appeared to her
26
The land of Al-Shaghour appeared at mid-morning
27
She reached Al-Jumaiyyah by evening, swiftly
28
Early morning, she reached Al-Adari’ then Al-Dana
29
What a dense darkness in Al-Aksh (place name)
30
The darkness grew until the road markers vanished
31
We reached Al-Ruhaymah in the middle of the night
32
More of the night remained than had passed
33
When we dismounted, we planted the spears
34
Above our glory and our heights
35
We spent the night kissing our swords
36
And wiped them from the blood of enemies
37
So the people of Egypt and Iraq would know
38
And the people of the Levant know I am the exceptional knight
39
I kept my word and refuse humiliation
40
And I dominated those who opposed me
41
Not everyone who speaks is truthful
42
And not everyone who is insulted refuses
43
The heart must have reason
44
A vision that cleaves rock with steadfastness
45
And whoever has a heart like mine
46
Reaches honor despite hardships
47
Every path the person walks
48
He walks it according to his capacity and will
49
Our young servant slept that night we escaped (referring to the imprisoned king)
50
He had slept before, in heedlessness and blindness
51
And he was close to us
52
Yet between us lay deserts of his ignorance and blindness
53
And whoever is unaware of his own limits becomes arrogant
54
Others see him differently than he perceives his own flaws

أَلا كُلُّ ماشِيَةِ الخَيزَلى
To every woman who walks in sway,

فِدا كُلُّ ماشِيَةِ الهَيذَبى
my heart prefers every horse that walks with strength and steadfastness

وَكُلِّ نَجاةٍ بُجاوِيَّةٍ
And every swift camel from the land of Nubia

خَنوفٍ وَما بِيَ حُسنُ المِشى
Soft-footed, yet I do not cherish graceful walking

وَلَكِنَّهُنَّ حِبالُ الحَياةِ
