Poem cover
1 Do you remember a stranger visited by sorrow?
2 From your memory, such that sleep has forsaken his eyelids?
3 He hides his burning aches, yet longing exposes him,
4 Until his secrets and his public state became as one.
5 O, woe to him! Does there remain within his breast His heart,
6 while it is held hostage by the ruins?
7 And his eye was kept awake while the darkness lingered,
8 By a dove, worn thin by grief just as grief has withered me.
9 So I spent the night lamenting, as she lamented upon her tree,
10 While the branch between us swayed, moved by our sighs.
11 Oh, will I ever sit again with those I love?
12 We shared a covenant, but now they have departed.
13 Do you keep the promises that I shall never break?
14 For the noble-hearted are tested by how they honor their word.
15 If a day of celebration has returned to you, remember a youth
16 Whom sorrow has visited, sparked by your memory and longing.
17 The nights have isolated him from those he loves,
18 So he began reciting to the night what fate has wrought.
19 With what shall I console myself? I have no family, no homeland,
20 No drinking companion, no cup, and no place to dwell.
