1 نَهاكَ عَنِ الغَوايَةَ ما نَهاكا
2 وَذُقتَ مِنَ الصَبابَةِ ما كَفاكا
3 وَطالَ سُراكَ في لَيلِ التَصابي
4 وَقَد أَصبَحتَ لَم تَحمَد سُراكا
5 فَلا تَجزَع لِحادِثَةِ اللَيالي
6 وَقُل لي إِن جَزِعتَ فَما عَساكا
7 وَكَيفَ تَلومُ حادِثَةً وَفيها
8 تَبَيَّنَ مَن أَحَبَّكَ أَو قَلاكا
9 بِروحي مَن تَذوبُ عَلَيهِ روحي
10 وَذُق ياقَلبُ ما صَنَعَت يَداكا
11 لَعَمري كُنتَ عَن هَذا غَنِيّاً
12 وَلَم تَعرِف ضَلالَكَ مِن هُداكا
13 ضَنيتُ مِنَ الهَوى وَشَقيتُ مِنهُ
14 وَأَنتَ تُجيبُ كُلَّ هَوىً دَعاكا
15 فَدَع ياقَلبُ ماقَد كُنتَ فيهِ
16 أَلَستَ تَرى حَبيبَكَ قَد جَفاكا
17 لَقَد بَلَغَت بِهِ روحي التَراقي
18 وَقَد نَظَرَت بِهِ عَيني الهَلاكا
19 فَيا مَن غابَ عَنّي وَهوَ روحي
20 وَكَيفَ أُطيقُ مِن روحي اِنفِكاكا
21 حَبيبي كَيفَ حَتّى غِبتَ عَنّي
22 أَتَعلَمُ أَنَّ لي أَحَداً سِواكا
23 أَراكَ هَجَرتَني هَجراً طَويلاً
24 وَما عَوَّدتَني مِن قَبلُ ذاكا
25 عَهِدتُكَ لاتُطيقُ الصَبرَ عَنّي
26 وَتَعصي في وَدادي مَن نَهاكا
27 فَكَيفَ تَغَيَّرَت تِلكَ السَجايا
28 وَمَن هَذا الَّذي عَنّي ثَناكا
29 فَلا وَاللَهِ ماحاوَلتَ عُذراً
30 فَكُلُّ الناسِ يُعذَرُ ما خَلاكا
31 وَما فارَقتَني طَوعاً وَلَكِن
32 دَهاكَ مِنَ المَنِيَّةِ ما دَهاكا
33 فَلَيتَكَ لَو بَقيتَ لِضُعفِ حالي
34 وَكانَ الناسُ كُلُّهُمُ فِداكا
35 يَعِزُّ عَلَيَّ حينَ أُديرُ عَيني
36 أُفَتِّشُ في مَكانِكَ لا أَراكا
37 وَلَم أَرَ في سِواكا وَلا أَراهُ
38 شَمائِلَكَ المَليحَةَ أَو حِلاكا
39 خَتَمتُ عَلى وِدادِكَ في ضَميري
40 وَلَيْسَ يَزَالُ مَخْتُوماً هُنَاكا
41 فَلَو أَسَفي لِجِسمِكَ كَيفَ يَبلى
42 وَيَذهَبُ بَعدَ بَهجَتِهِ سَناكا
43 وَما لي أَدَّعي أَنّي وَفِيٌّ
44 وَلَستُ مُشارِكاً لَكَ في بَلاكا
45 تَموتُ وَما أَموتُ عَلَيكَ حُزناً
46 وَحَقِّ اللَّهِ خُنتُكَ في هَواكا
47 وَيا خَجَلي إِذا قالوا مُحِبٌّ
48 وَلَم أَنفَعكَ في خَخطبٍ أَتاكا
49 أَرى الباكينَ فيكَ مَعي كَثيراً
50 وَلَيْسَ كَمَن بَكى مَن قَد تَباكى
51 فَيا مَن قَد نَوى سَفَراً بَعيداً
52 مَتى قُل لي رُجوعُكَ مَن نَواكا
53 جَزاكَ اللَهُ عَنّي كُلَّ خَيرٍ
54 وَأَعلَمُ أَنَّهُ عَنّي جَزاكا
55 فَيا قَبرَ الحَبيبِ وَدِدتُ أَنّي
56 حَمَلتُ وَلَو عَلى عَيني ثَراكا
57 سَقاكَ الغَيثُ هَتّاناً وَإِلّا
58 فَحَسْبُكَ مِن دُموعي ما سَقاكا
59 وَلا زالَ السَلامُ عَلَيكَ مِنّي
60 يَرُفُّ مَعَ النَسيمِ عَلى ذُراكا

English Translation

1 That which forbade you from straying has forbidden you
2 And you have tasted of passion what was enough for you
3 And long was your night-travel in the night of acting youthful
4 And you have reached the morning not praising your travel
5 So do not be restless because of the nights' accident
6 And tell me, if you are restless, what can you do?
7 And how do you blame an accident in which
8 It became clear who loved you or who loathed you
9 With my soul, the one for whom my soul melts
10 And taste, O heart, what your hands have made
11 Truly, you were in no need of this
12 And you did not know your straying from your guidance
13 I have withered from passion and suffered from it
14 While you answer every passion that called you
15 So leave, O heart, what you were in
16 Do you not see your beloved has treated you harshly?
17 Because of him, my soul has reached the collarbones
18 And because of him, my eye has looked at destruction
19 O you who is absent from me, while he is my soul
20 And how can I endure a separation from my soul?
21 My beloved, how is it that you have become absent from me?
22 Do you know that I have anyone besides you?
23 I see you have abandoned me for a long abandonment
24 And you have not accustomed me to that before
25 I knew you as one who could not endure patience away from me
26 And you disobey, for my love, whoever forbade you
27 So how have those traits changed?
28 And who is this who has turned you away from me?
29 No, by God, you did not even proffer an excuse
30 For all of mankind may be excused, save for you
31 And you did not part from me by choice, but
32 The calamity of death that strikes, has struck you
33 So would that you had stayed for my frail state
34 And let all of humanity be a ransom for you
35 It is hard for me when I turn my eye
36 I search in your place and I do not see you
37 And I have not seen in anyone else, nor will I see it,
38 Your beautiful traits or your adornment
39 I have sealed your love within my conscience
40 And it does not cease to be sealed there
41 O my sorrow for your body, how it decays
42 And your radiance vanishes after its splendor
43 And why do I claim that I am faithful
44 While I do not share with you your affliction
45 You die, yet I do not die out of grief for you
46 And by the right of God, I have betrayed you in your love
47 And O my shame when they say "a lover"
48 While I did not benefit you in a disaster that came to you
49 I see those weeping for you with me are many
50 But the one who truly wept is not like the one who feigned weeping
51 O you who has intended a far journey
52 Tell me, when will you come back from that distance?
53 May God reward you on my behalf with every good
54 And I know that He has indeed rewarded you on my behalf
55 O grave of the beloved, I wished that I
56 Had carried, even on my eyes, your dust
57 May the rain-clouds water you with pouring rain, or else
58 Then let my tears suffice for what they have watered you
59 And may peace from me never cease upon you
60 Fluttering with the breeze over your heights
1 نَهاكَ عَنِ الغَوايَةَ ما نَهاكا
That which forbade you from straying has forbidden you
2 وَذُقتَ مِنَ الصَبابَةِ ما كَفاكا
And you have tasted of passion what was enough for you
3 وَطالَ سُراكَ في لَيلِ التَصابي
And long was your night-travel in the night of acting youthful
4 وَقَد أَصبَحتَ لَم تَحمَد سُراكا
And you have reached the morning not praising your travel
5 فَلا تَجزَع لِحادِثَةِ اللَيالي
So do not be restless because of the nights' accident
6 وَقُل لي إِن جَزِعتَ فَما عَساكا
And tell me, if you are restless, what can you do?
7 وَكَيفَ تَلومُ حادِثَةً وَفيها
And how do you blame an accident in which
8 تَبَيَّنَ مَن أَحَبَّكَ أَو قَلاكا
It became clear who loved you or who loathed you
9 بِروحي مَن تَذوبُ عَلَيهِ روحي
With my soul, the one for whom my soul melts
10 وَذُق ياقَلبُ ما صَنَعَت يَداكا
And taste, O heart, what your hands have made
11 لَعَمري كُنتَ عَن هَذا غَنِيّاً
Truly, you were in no need of this
12 وَلَم تَعرِف ضَلالَكَ مِن هُداكا
And you did not know your straying from your guidance
13 ضَنيتُ مِنَ الهَوى وَشَقيتُ مِنهُ
I have withered from passion and suffered from it
14 وَأَنتَ تُجيبُ كُلَّ هَوىً دَعاكا
While you answer every passion that called you
15 فَدَع ياقَلبُ ماقَد كُنتَ فيهِ
So leave, O heart, what you were in
16 أَلَستَ تَرى حَبيبَكَ قَد جَفاكا
Do you not see your beloved has treated you harshly?
17 لَقَد بَلَغَت بِهِ روحي التَراقي
Because of him, my soul has reached the collarbones
18 وَقَد نَظَرَت بِهِ عَيني الهَلاكا
And because of him, my eye has looked at destruction
19 فَيا مَن غابَ عَنّي وَهوَ روحي
O you who is absent from me, while he is my soul
20 وَكَيفَ أُطيقُ مِن روحي اِنفِكاكا
And how can I endure a separation from my soul?
21 حَبيبي كَيفَ حَتّى غِبتَ عَنّي
My beloved, how is it that you have become absent from me?
22 أَتَعلَمُ أَنَّ لي أَحَداً سِواكا
Do you know that I have anyone besides you?
23 أَراكَ هَجَرتَني هَجراً طَويلاً
I see you have abandoned me for a long abandonment
24 وَما عَوَّدتَني مِن قَبلُ ذاكا
And you have not accustomed me to that before
25 عَهِدتُكَ لاتُطيقُ الصَبرَ عَنّي
I knew you as one who could not endure patience away from me
26 وَتَعصي في وَدادي مَن نَهاكا
And you disobey, for my love, whoever forbade you
27 فَكَيفَ تَغَيَّرَت تِلكَ السَجايا

28 وَمَن هَذا الَّذي عَنّي ثَناكا
And who is this who has turned you away from me?
29 فَلا وَاللَهِ ماحاوَلتَ عُذراً
No, by God, you did not even proffer an excuse
30 فَكُلُّ الناسِ يُعذَرُ ما خَلاكا
For all of mankind may be excused, save for you
31 وَما فارَقتَني طَوعاً وَلَكِن
And you did not part from me by choice, but
32 دَهاكَ مِنَ المَنِيَّةِ ما دَهاكا

33 فَلَيتَكَ لَو بَقيتَ لِضُعفِ حالي
So would that you had stayed for my frail state
34 وَكانَ الناسُ كُلُّهُمُ فِداكا

35 يَعِزُّ عَلَيَّ حينَ أُديرُ عَيني
It is hard for me when I turn my eye
36 أُفَتِّشُ في مَكانِكَ لا أَراكا
I search in your place and I do not see you
37 وَلَم أَرَ في سِواكا وَلا أَراهُ
And I have not seen in anyone else, nor will I see it,
38 شَمائِلَكَ المَليحَةَ أَو حِلاكا
Your beautiful traits or your adornment
39 خَتَمتُ عَلى وِدادِكَ في ضَميري
I have sealed your love within my conscience
40 وَلَيْسَ يَزَالُ مَخْتُوماً هُنَاكا
And it does not cease to be sealed there
41 فَلَو أَسَفي لِجِسمِكَ كَيفَ يَبلى
O my sorrow for your body, how it decays
42 وَيَذهَبُ بَعدَ بَهجَتِهِ سَناكا
And your radiance vanishes after its splendor
43 وَما لي أَدَّعي أَنّي وَفِيٌّ
And why do I claim that I am faithful
44 وَلَستُ مُشارِكاً لَكَ في بَلاكا
While I do not share with you your affliction
45 تَموتُ وَما أَموتُ عَلَيكَ حُزناً
You die, yet I do not die out of grief for you
46 وَحَقِّ اللَّهِ خُنتُكَ في هَواكا
And by the right of God, I have betrayed you in your love
47 وَيا خَجَلي إِذا قالوا مُحِبٌّ
And O my shame when they say "a lover"
48 وَلَم أَنفَعكَ في خَخطبٍ أَتاكا
While I did not benefit you in a disaster that came to you
49 أَرى الباكينَ فيكَ مَعي كَثيراً
I see those weeping for you with me are many
50 وَلَيْسَ كَمَن بَكى مَن قَد تَباكى
But the one who truly wept is not like the one who feigned weeping
51 فَيا مَن قَد نَوى سَفَراً بَعيداً
O you who has intended a far journey
52 مَتى قُل لي رُجوعُكَ مَن نَواكا
Tell me, when will you come back from that distance?
53 جَزاكَ اللَهُ عَنّي كُلَّ خَيرٍ
May God reward you on my behalf with every good
54 وَأَعلَمُ أَنَّهُ عَنّي جَزاكا
And I know that He has indeed rewarded you on my behalf
55 فَيا قَبرَ الحَبيبِ وَدِدتُ أَنّي
O grave of the beloved, I wished that I
56 حَمَلتُ وَلَو عَلى عَيني ثَراكا
Had carried, even on my eyes, your dust
57 سَقاكَ الغَيثُ هَتّاناً وَإِلّا
May the rain-clouds water you with pouring rain, or else
58 فَحَسْبُكَ مِن دُموعي ما سَقاكا
Then let my tears suffice for what they have watered you
59 وَلا زالَ السَلامُ عَلَيكَ مِنّي
And may peace from me never cease upon you
60 يَرُفُّ مَعَ النَسيمِ عَلى ذُراكا
Fluttering with the breeze over your heights
