1 عَرَفَ الْهَوَى فِي نَظْرَتِي فَنَهَانِي
2 خِلٌّ رَعَيْتُ وِدَادَهُ فَرَعَانِي
3 أَخْفَيْتُ عَنْهُ سَرِيرَتِي فَوَشَى بِهَا
4 دَمْعٌ أَبَاحَ لَهُ حِمَى كِتْمَانِي
5 فَبِأَيِّ مَعْذِرَةٍ أُكَذِّبُ لَوْعَةً
6 شَهِدَتْ بِهَا الْعَبَرَاتُ مِنْ أَجْفَانِي
7 يَا صَاحِ لا أَبْصَرْتَ مَا صَنَعَ الْهَوَى
8 بِأَخِيكَ يَوْمَ تَفَرُّقِ الأَظْعَانِ
9 يَوْمٌ فَقَدْتُ الْحِلْمَ فِيهِ وَشَفَّنِي
10 وَلَهٌ أَصَابَ جَوَانِحِي فَرَمَانِي
11 فَعَلَيْكَ مِنْ قَلْبِي السَّلامُ فَإِنَّهُ
12 تَبِعَ الْهَوَى فَمَضَى بِغَيْرِ عِنَانِ
13 هَيْهَاتَ يَرْجِعُ بَعْدَما عَلِقَتْ بِهِ
14 لَحَظَاتُ ذَاكَ الشَّادِنِ الْفَتَّانِ
15 وَعَلَى الرَّحَائِلِ نِسْوَةٌ عَرَبِيَّةٌ
16 يَخْدَعْنَ لُبَّ الْحَازِمِ الْيَقْظَانِ
17 مَا كُنْتُ أَعْلَمُ قَبْلَ بَادِرَةِ النَّوَى
18 أَنَّ الأُسُودَ فَرَائِسُ الْغِزْلانِ
19 رَحَلُوا فَأَيَّةُ عَبْرَةٍ مَسْفُوحَةٍ
20 وَيَدٍ تَضُمُّ حَشَاً مِنَ الْخَفَقَانِ
21 وَلَقَدْ حَنَنْتُ لِبَارِقٍ شَخَصَتْ لَهُ
22 مِنَّا الْعُيُونُ بِأَبْرَقِ الْحَنَّانِ
23 يَسْتَنُّ فِي عُرْضِ الْغَمَامِ كَأَنَّهُ
24 لَهَبٌ تَرَدَّدَ فِي سَمَاءِ دُخَانِ
25 فَانْظُرْ لَعَلَّكَ تَسْتَبِينُ رِكَابَهُ
26 طَوْعَ الرِّيَاحِ يُصِيبُ أَيَّ مَكَانِ
27 فَهُنَاكَ تَجْتَمِعُ الشُّعْوبُ وَتَلْتَقِي
28 هُدْبُ الْخُدُورِ عَلَى غُصُونِ الْبَانِ

English Translation

1 Love revealed itself in my glance and tried to restrain me
2 A companion whose affection I cherished, and he cared for me in return
3 I concealed my inner secret from him, but it was betrayed
4 A tear permitted what secrecy had protected
5 By what excuse can I deny such anguish
6 When tears from my eyelids bore witness
7 O companion, may you never see what love has done
8 To your brother on the day the caravans parted
9 A day when I lost patience and was weakened
10 A passion struck my heart and cast me aside
11 So take from my heart a farewell of peace
12 It followed desire and went without reins
13 It is far from returning after becoming attached
14 By the glances of that captivating, graceful one
15 And upon the mounts were Arab women
16 Who bewilder the mind of the cautious and alert
17 I did not know, before the first shock of parting
18 That lions are prey to gazelles
19 They departed, and what tears were shed
20 And a hand clasped a heart trembling with passion
21 I longed for a flash of lightning toward which
22 Our eyes turned, hoping for mercy and tenderness
23 It streaked across the breadth of the clouds as if
24 A flame flickering in a smoky sky
25 Look, perhaps you may discern their caravan
26 Driven by the winds, reaching any place
27 For there peoples gather and meet
28 And the curtains of the tents meet the branches of the bān

Love revealed itself in my glance and tried to restrain me
2 خِلٌّ رَعَيْتُ وِدَادَهُ فَرَعَانِي
A companion whose affection I cherished, and he cared for me in return

27 فَهُنَاكَ تَجْتَمِعُ الشُّعْوبُ وَتَلْتَقِي
For there peoples gather and meet
28 هُدْبُ الْخُدُورِ عَلَى غُصُونِ الْبَانِ
And the curtains of the tents meet the branches of the bān
