عَرَفتَ دِيارَ زَينَبَ بِالكَثيبِ
2
كَخَطِّ الوَحيِ في الرَقِّ القَشيبِ
3
تَعاوَرُها الرِياحُ وَكُلُّ جَونٍ
4
مِنَ الوَسمِيِّ مُنهَمِرٍ سَكوبِ
5
فَأَمسى رَسمُها خَلَقاً وَأَمسَت
6
يَباباً بَعدَ ساكِنِها الحَبيبِ
7
فَدَع عَنكَ التَذَكُّرَ كُلَّ يَومٍ
8
وَرُدَّ حَرارَةَ الصَدرِ الكَئيبِ
9
وَخَبِّر بِالَّذي لا عَيبَ فيهِ
10
بِصِدقٍ غَيرِ إِخبارِ الكَذوبِ
11
بِما صَنَعَ المَليكُ غَداةَ بَدرٍ
12
لَنا في المُشرِكينَ مِنَ النَصيبِ
13
غَداةَ كَأَنَّ جَمعَهُمُ حِراءٌ
14
بَدَت أَركانُهُ جُنحَ الغُروبِ
15
فَلاقَيناهُمُ مِنّا بِجَمعٍ
16
كَأُسدِ الغابِ مِن مُردٍ وَشيبِ
17
أَمامَ مُحَمَّدٍ قَد آزَروهُ
18
عَلى الأَعداءِ في رَهجِ الحُروبِ
19
بِأَيديهِم صَوارِمُ مُرهَفاتٌ
20
وَكُلُّ مُجَرَّبٍ خاظي الكُعوبِ
21
بَنو الأَوسِ الغَطارِفِ آزَرَتها
22
بَنو النَجّارِ في الدينِ الصَليبِ
23
فَغادَرنا أَبا جَهلٍ صَريعاً
24
وَعُتبَةَ قَد تَرَكنا بِالجَبوبِ
25
وَشَيبَةَ قَد تَرَكنا في رِجالٍ
26
ذَوي حَسَبٍ إِذا اِنتَسَبوا حَسيبِ
27
يُناديهِم رَسولُ اللَهِ لَمّا
28
قَذَفناهُم كَباكِبَ في القَليبِ
29
أَلَم تَجِدوا حَديثِ كانَ حَقّاً
30
وَأَمرُ اللَهِ يَأخُذُ بِالقُلوبِ
31
فَما نَطَقوا وَلَو نَطَقوا لَقالوا
32
صَدَقتَ وَكُنتَ ذا رَأيٍ مُصيبِ
English Translation
1
Have you known Zaynab’s dwelling by the dune,
2
like the script of revelation on pure parchment?
3
The winds have taken turns upon her trace,
4
and every heavy cloud poured down its rain.
5
Her mark has faded, worn and old,
6
a barren waste since her beloved left.
7
So cease your daily memories and lament,
8
and cool the burning sorrow of your breast.
9
Speak only what is pure of blame,
10
with truth untouched by tongues that lie.
11
Tell what the Almighty wrought on Badr’s morn,
12
for He bestowed on us our share of triumph.
13
That day, their hosts appeared like Mount Ḥirāʾ,
14
its pillars dim beneath the wings of dusk.
15
We met them with a gathering of our own,
16
like lions of the wild, both young and old.
17
Before Muhammad ﷺ they stood, his loyal guard,
18
against the foe amid the storm of war.
19
Within their hands were keen and gleaming blades,
20
and every warrior firm and tried in heart.
21
The noble sons of Aws lent their might,
22
and Banu al-Najjar stood strong in faith.
23
We left Abu Jahl fallen to the earth,
24
and ʿUtbah cast aside within the pit.
25
And Shaybah lay among the noble slain,
26
men famed for birth and lineage high.
27
Then God’s Messenger ﷺ called out to them,
28
when we had thrown them down into the well of Qalīb:
29
“Did you not find my word to be the truth?
30
For God’s command takes hold of every heart.”
31
They did not speak—but had they spoken,
32
they would have said, “You spoke the truth, and judged aright.”

عَرَفتَ دِيارَ زَينَبَ بِالكَثيبِ
Have you known Zaynab’s dwelling by the dune,
2
كَخَطِّ الوَحيِ في الرَقِّ القَشيبِ
like the script of revelation on pure parchment?

تَعاوَرُها الرِياحُ وَكُلُّ جَونٍ
The winds have taken turns upon her trace,
